Beneath The Willow

Although your feet don't reach the ground
When you sit beneath the crown
On a throne that throws you out
Because you failed to pass the test

So now you're floating high above
And you feel you've had enough
But your landing gear is stuck
Don't panic, take a deeper breath

'Cause it's a major victory
When you hit that six by three
Without any luxuries
I mean, you're not the only one

Upstairs the people on the street
Gather 'round to laugh and weep
While you're down here counting sheep
Rest up, the journey's just begun

To Pieces

Broken on arrival
So we gather up what's left of us
And put the pieces where we think they go
This one is heavy, maybe
It goes over here by chance
And that one over there, be careful
It has cut me more than once

Heading off to battle
Or returning from, with either one
We put our pieces where they shouldn't go
This slot is empty, maybe
It got lost along the way
And that one wouldn't go, I'll have to grow
To where it stays in place

Although the sun is in our eyes
We leave the shadows behind
I know it's hard to see, it's hard to see
It's hard to see but I believe

I'll meet you at the table
Where the Father's love will wait on us
And put our pieces where they need to go
And if I'm ready, maybe
This time I will be made whole
Or even more, my soul restored
And everyone made beautiful

Although the sun is in our eyes
We leave the shadows behind
I know it's hard to see, hard to see
It's hard to see but I believe

The Thaw

One single sheet
Holds all the keys
To all I love
All folded up

Sun beats down bright
Snow loses fight
Small rivers float
My paper boat
Away

Gone 'round the bend
Down hills and glens
Through fields unknown
Then safely home
Again
I'm not worried now

I'm not worried now

Abandoned

Jungle for lawn
Dandelion pond
Tree trunk painted white
Trash can tipped on side
Untouched

Gutters filled with leaves
Helicopter seeds
Tire flower pot
Junk mail shoved in slot
Untouched

Throw a rock

Bird bath cracked in half
Worn out welcome mat
Windows boarded shut
Rusted pick-up truck
Untouched

Throw a rock and run

Destination

Automobiles and rolling wheels
That stop and go and slowly pull
Their cargo to the next event
Our pilot steers with patience years
Of brake lights, horns, and radios
Have formed like prints on wet cement

Packed inside we play I-Spy
And cheat and cry and duke it out
Till no one speaks and fall asleep
We hum along and wake and yawn
At waysides, pumps, and burger joints
To tumble out and bend our knees

We pile back in while bickering
On who's got dibs and who sits where
And someone's hogging all the grapes
Then settle down without a sound
And come to terms with where we are
And rest in knowing we are on our way

Afraid

I am unprepared to meet you everywhere
I'm scared and need repairs
I am unprepared to meet you everywhere
I'm scared and need more prayer
I am unprepared to meet you everywhere
I'm scared and need repairs
I am unprepared to meet you everywhere
I'm scared and need more prayer

Not closed, but closer
Not closed, but closer
Not closed, but closer
Not closed, but closer to you

I am unprepared to meet you everywhere
I'm scared and need repairs
I am unprepared to meet you everywhere
I'm scared and need more prayer
I am unprepared to meet you everywhere
I swear I need repairs
I am unprepared to meet you everywhere
I'm afraid I need more prayer

Not closed, but closer
Not closed, but closer
Not closed, but closer
Not closed, but closer to you
